I Want to foster are leading provider of Respite foster care across Essex, Suffolk and beyond to assist foster carers with temporary cover if they need to have a break.
What is a Respite Foster Carer?
A respite foster carer‘s role is to provide short term respite for a “looked-after child”, thereby allowing the full time carer an opportunity to take time out whilst providing the young person with a break from their normal routine.
The respite usually takes place in the respite carer’s own home and can vary from a few hours to a couple of weeks.
The respite often forms part of the full time carer’s annual entitlement, but can also be a scheduled regular break offered as “respite support” by the agency to ensure that the relationship and placement remains viable.

“I am a single female carer living in a two bedroomed flat near Southend on Sea. I have one son currently at university, whose bedroom I use for respite. As my son returns home regularly and as I also have other employment, respite fostering is the most suitable option.
Once I had expressed an interest in fostering, my journey from initial home visit, through application and assessment to eventual registration as a Respite Foster Carer, was a relatively short and efficient one.
I have been a respite foster carer in Essex for 18 months and can honestly say that I have found it to be a truly rewarding and fulfilling role. A young person is usually placed with me for anything from a few hours in a day, to a week or two. This is either on an ‘as and when’ basis or as part of a scheduled respite plan eg one weekend a month.
Through regular respite I have been able to build a close and meaningful relationship with many of the young people. Activities we like to do vary from simple cycle rides along the seafront and walks in the woods to jam packed days out in London!”
